This was the day for what we came for - the NASCAR race. There was a bit of confusion as to the start time, as our tickets said 2 but races had been starting at 2 eastern, meaning we were wondering if it was really starting at 1 central. And today was the first day of daylight saving time. A couple in the hotel's breakfast room confirmed this, but a check of NASCAR.com showed the race really was at 2.
There was hardly any traffic getting up there (granted, we got there about 10:45). The most confusing thing was where to park as there seemed to be multiple empty lots. We ended up parking closer to where we thought we'd end up, which paid off at the end of the day. As we were walking into the midway area, we heard the guy at the Sprint Experience saying they were going to have Jimmie Johnson, who was at the Chevy area, coming up at 11:30. We were able to get a good spot for photos. The biggest thing we learned was that Jimmie enjoys chocolate milk.
Later, we went over to Toyota to get our free hot dogs, chips, and drinks for showing our Toyota key; they didn't do this last year and then in September, we missed out in Loudon because this random guy gave us pit passes, and when we went to the Toyota Experience, they were closing up. We also went in a simulator to get a sense of the banking at the different tracks and I got a new 48 T-shirt. The midway experience was definitely strong.
The track was big but not full. We had empty seats to the right of us and the second to the left was pretty sparse. That may have been because there were giant poles all around us. It got pretty chilly so I was glad they had hot chocolate. No big wrecks but Jimmie won so it was all good.
Since the track was on the edges of Fort Worth and our hotel was in Dallas (near Love Field) we decided to go to one of the destinations recommended for Irving, which is in between, and went to El Fenix (rhymes with Phoenix) for Tex Mex. I had a fajita salad, which included marinated chicken, grilled red onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, and monterey and cheddar cheeses. It was good but not as good as Peggy Sue BBQ. -- POSTED BY COLLEEN
