Electric Powered Fondue - March 24, 2009

What do electric cars have in common with chocolate fondue? Give up... March 24th?
For Colleen's birthday, we took a historical tour of Aspen. Our tour guide was great, showing us all the local historical buildings and driving us around town in an electric vehicle he described as a "stretch golf cart... worth $20,000" He said it was paid for by an additional real estate fee on all home sales in Aspen. The anti-tax part of me wanted to protest, but I kept quiet.

Our tour guide teased that he would explain how the Compromise Mine got its name, but tried to avoid our repeated questions on the subject. Eventually, we got our answer, just before the end of the tour.

Today, we also took a ride up a snowy road bound for the ghost town. But, we ran out of time, and the snow clearly wanted us to stay away. Maybe some day, we'll return.

After a fun ride home which turned into a photo shoot for Shannon,

we opened Colleen's birthday gifts at her apartment before going out to dinner at the Melting Pot. Think, everything fondue. You imagine it, you can dip it... in cheese, chocolate, whatever you want!

Our server seemed disappointed when we didn't order wine or go for one of the pre-packaged $120 dinners. But, he warmed up to us throughout the evening, particularly when we started asking him about what happens behind the closed curtains that some booths enjoyed. Apparently, fondue gets some people in the mood!

Our favorite part was the dinner and desert portions. My favorites were the Cajun chicken and the brownies. Next time, we're going just for desert! Do yourself a favor and ask for extra brownies, they'll be happy to oblige (no extra charge).

Reflecting on my nieces and nephews, I can't imagine any kids liking a fondue restaurant. However, judging from the large birthday party downstairs featuring balloons and singing kids, I was wrong.

Happy Birthday to Colleen.
