hing more out of Florida than anything else, with palm trees providing shade. The snack bar was a nice feature as well, although I actually think I preferred the beach we went to a couple hours later down to the boardwalk to our right. It had nicer sand, but no shade...and no Mini Kelson. This was the second trip (see blog entries from June 30) where we saw a miniature version of our dear friend Eric Kelson (or, how we'd imagine his offspring to look like.) This time it was a 5-year-old version, with a penchant for seagull chasing and saying, "Hello." At the second beach, we saw a teenage Kelson clearly in love by the hand-holding. Back at the first beach, we saw another (non-Kelson) kid with board shorts that matched Jon's towel. Well, they can't all look like him. Colleen apparently fell asleep on the beach as otherwise she would have remembered, "Livin' on a Prayer," which is what the iPod said had just played. The only other blog-worthy moment to note here is the guy who asked us while we were walking between beaches, "Do you have any more plastic bags?" (We were carrying our dry clothes in them.) As if we carry around extra plastic bags just for the heck of it. Apparently he wanted them for what looked like bike parts.Around 4 p.m. we headed back to the hotel to clean up for dinner at Harry Caray's (we made reservations that morning.) We then found out they opened for dinner at 5, which is why all the waiters were standing around by the entrance. Sadly, we had a no-nonsense waiter and not Kobe Bryant, who was also an option. Colleen did have a fabulous prime rib. We saw a signed picture from the Bills' Marv Levy on the way out and
a Bob Costas on the way in, but alas, no Bill Kurtis.Dinner didn't take as long as we thought, so we had some time to kill before our boat cruise (planned because there are fireworks Wednesday nights during the summer.) During our trip down past the tour boat docks to practically Navy Pier we stumbled upon this totally random restaurant in the middle of nowhere (you wouldn't have known it was there) where the host practically accosted us and tried to get us to buy a drink. Tempting, because only guests could use the porta-potties. Jon apparently had had too much to drink as he twirled Colleen to the random music being piped through the speakers. While we were still laughing about that, a woman came up to us and told us how "cute we were, walking along." So that definitely made us feel good. We also saw this really cool fountain thing shoot out what we later learned was a "water cannon" across the river.
On the way back we went on the other side of the river and inside the fountain, which was curved in an arc.
While getting on our boat, we heard a woman say, "24 in my party, follow me." A guy with her explained that they were all foreign journalists. In fact, he said we might be able to call them the Anderson Coopers of their countries. Our tour guide was a New Yawker but he seemed pretty knowledgeable. Colleen was hoping that we would go down more in the river and hear more about those sites, but apparently they only do that during the day cruises. We were wondering why we parked ourselves so close to the "loch" that we had to go through to get in until our guide revealed that we had 4 minutes from when the loch opened to when the water cannon was going to go off. Seeing it go just behind us was really cool, and a good capper to the week.Beach: A Dinner: A-. Boat cruise: A-. Trip overall: A.
